Truth,, Lies and Candor
Welcome to the Uncommon Communicator podcast, your host James Gable and Brandon Thompson are here to bring enlightenment to the topic of communication.

It takes a lot of truth to gain trust but just one lie to lose it all

1.    Truth

2.    Lies

3.    Candor

Speaking the truth is one of the foundations of being an Uncommon Communicator. How we speak, recognize, and use it will determine the outcome.

Truth and trust have a deep connection. In Hebrew, both stem from the same root

Lies :

Who Gets Lied to the Most

1. Parents – 86%
2. Friends – 75%
3. Siblings – 73%
4. Spouses – 69%

Where the Most Lies are Seen

1. Resumes – 40%
2. Dating Site – 90%

Everyday Lying

 – 6 lies are told daily by men to their partner, boss, or colleagues.
 – 3 lies are told daily by women to their partner, boss, or colleagues.
 – Lying is considered more common among phone calls than face to face chats.
 – 1 lie in every 7 is discovered as far as liars can tell.
 – A 10th of lies are just exaggerations and 60% were outright deceptions.
 – 70% of liars claim they would tell their lies again.
 – Americans tell an average of 11 lies a week.

People are surprisingly bad at detecting lies. One study, for example, found that people were only able to accurately detect lying 54% of the time in a lab setting—hardly impressive when factoring in a 50% detection rate by pure chance alone.3

Tips for lie detection

1.     Being vague; offering few details.

2.     Repeating questions before answering them.

3.     Speaking in sentence fragments.

4.     Failing to provide specific details when a story is challenged.

5.     Grooming behaviors such as playing with hair or pressing fingers to lips.

Candor:

unreserved, honest, or sincere expression : FORTHRIGHTNESS

or:

the quality of being open and honest in expression; frankness.

Often referred to as refreshing

Radical Candor by Kim Scott

Radical: far-reaching or thorough.

Candor: being open and honest in expression.

In other words, radical candor is the quality of being thoroughly open and honest with others. When it comes to work and management, this means balancing care for your team members with helping them know where they need to improve.
